Become a Modern Cloth Nappy Mum and Reap the Rewards

18-Mar-2016

I am the classic convenience parent. If it isn’t easy, then it’s not for me. Having said this, the health and well being of my children will always come before anything else and when I discovered the potential health risks of using regular disposable nappies, I soon found alternatives!

Working full-time I never really gave cloth a chance… but then I discovered modern cloth nappies. There are now hundreds of types and brands on the market and it can be quite overwhelming when you first look into what to use. I tried 6 different types myself in the first year! This was more for the purposes of market research rather than necessity, however it has given me a good understanding of the basics and has enabled me to be able to recommend (and warn against) certain modern cloth nappy alternatives.

So why did I make the switch to cloth?

Health Concerns

There are up to 17 different chemicals used in the production of disposable nappies. Absorption chemicals dry baby’s skin and take away their natural protection against things such as nappy rash. Disposable nappies are made of up to 85% plastic, therefore they do not breathe like cloth fabrics. Particularly in the summer time this can mean that your child’s genitalia can be exposed to a warmer than normal environment. It has been suggested that this may lead to fertility problems later in life. We have not yet seen the real effects of this as disposable nappies have only been commercially available and in use for just over 25 years.

Saving Thousands

Using disposable nappies can cost up to $4,000 per child from birth to toilet training. Although convenience can be worth paying an extra price, modern cloth alternatives are just as easy to use and do not take much extra time out of your day to clean. Modern cloth alternatives do not require soaking and wet ones (i.e. wees only, not poos) can be washed with your regular wash load, using half your normal detergent requirements.

Doing my bit for the Environment

I must admit that pre-children the environment was the last thing on my mind. I’m now more concerned about the type of world I will leave behind for my children and the example I set for them. Cloth just isn’t that hard and a little extra time each day in the first couple of years of your child’s life is a small price to pay to leave the earth in a cleaner condition.
